La figure du tribunal est habituellement axiale, monumentale et centrée. Elle est ici détournée pour que l’axe se termine sur un jardin en sous-plomb venant desservir le bâtiment alloué au tribunal de première instance ainsi que celui dédié au tribunal de la famille. Faire d’un petit programme un bâtiment surdimensionné était l’une des ambitions de ce projet. Il nous est apparu nécessaire que l’équipement puisse pleine ment jouer son rôle de représentation de l’état malgré son positionnement sur un territoire d’entrée de ville, marginal et sans véritable centralité. La présence du tribunal est incarnée par l’association d’une composition verticale sur la profondeur de la parcelle pour les salles d’audience, et d’une dimension horizontale sur la largeur de la parcelle pour mettre en scène la strate des bureaux suspendus.

This project endeavors to denude the figure of the courthouse of its daunting character and to make a building that is as user-friendly and publicly accessible as possible. As a metaphor for the transparency of the judicial system, the building reveals the inner workings of the courthouse to the public eye. A large planted plaza is at the heart of the site, and all publicly accessible spaces are located around this garden. The District Court and the Family Court are separate but face each other through the garden. All the courtrooms are accessed from a shared atrium hall overlooking this garden, and all the courtrooms benefit from natural light. Administration and offices are placed in a suspended volume which shades the central garden plaza. Organized around a series of patios, the offices maintain a visual connection with the public realm below.
