The project for the city of Mazagan is conceived as a fulcrum between the cities of El Jadida, 10 km to the south, and Azemmour, 5 km to the north. While geographically close, these two cities evince very different cultures, orientations, and influences. El Jadida is a historic port city that has born witness to the interchange of European and Moroccan cultures, a dialogue which is evident in its architecture and urbanism. In the last several decades, the city has exploded in size and spread well beyond the military ramparts that date from the Portuguese occupation. Azemmour, the smaller of the two cities, is a river city sitting on the mouth of the Oum Errabiaa. Built on its banks, the city has long relied on the river for its livelihood. Connected to both, Mazagan will be a territory with its own life and identity that will spur the urban renewal of the surrounding areas.
