A project conceived through the poetic relationship between aviation and the desert, this building is incarnated by a powerful geometry above the shifting grounds and under the sheltering sky. Perched on four dunes within the landscape of King Salman Park, the powerful and monolithic geometry of the museum establishes a vast protective canopy over the site.
At the site’s center, the Riyad shelters a place of public gathering and the ascent into the museum. Upon arriving at the museum level, the large vestibule houses all the museum’s public functions. The galleries of the collection form a vast and continuous vaulted space, allowing for a wealth of museographic situations and possibilities. As a backdrop to the suspended aircraft, the wraparound screen surrounds the entire nave, creating a dynamic background that is in continuous dialogue with the objects in the collection. Above, the topographical roof accommodates gathering, rest and performance areas, while offering panoramic views of King Salman Park and the city of Riyadh.
